TOMMI TOIJA

Finnish sculptor & artist

Tommi Toija

I`m Tommi Toija,

a sculptor and artist born 1974 in Lapua, Finland.

I make art through making it, not thinking about it.

I live and breathe working on my art.

My works develop gradually and support one another. Sometimes the value of a piece does not become apparent until at a later stage.

Fate, purpose or partly a small coincidence, they always do good, whether it is my pieces of art falling down in my crowded studio or life in general.

I’m interested in all the shit that each of us are carrying.

“Bathed in brilliant sunlight this bewitching installation brought back childhood memories and experiences, feelings of happiness.

But on closer examination, the little fellow seemed so lonely, sensitive and withdrawn.”

— Susanna Luojus Exhibition Director Amos Anderson Art Museum

“…The glass-ball soap bubbles sealed him into his own world.

I later realised that the first impression of Toija’s sculptures often changes into something different, even the opposite, the longer you look at them.”

— Susanna Luojus Exhibition Director Amos Anderson Art Museum

“I could have gone on for ever looking at them, trying to hear what they were saying and fathoming the essence of their enigmatic gazes.”

— Mikko Oranen, FM
